Go Berkey Kit, Water Filter On the Go

Some may think that the best and the healthier way to trump the tap water problem is through water bottle, but the truth is that we actually have no good reason to resort to drinking a bottled water.

Aside from the fact that bottled water is not regulated, they are also quite expensive and according to EPA, it is not necessarily safer than tap water.

Bottled water also does not help with our environmental problems since about ⅔ of those bottles end up being thrown in landfills and oceans polluting the water and poisoning the wildlife.

The best way to beat the safety problem that we are facing with drinking water is through an effective water filtration system.

Berkey Water Filters
A Berkey water filter is very powerful that it has been classified as a purifier, that shows that Berkey has exceeded the abilities that are standard for a water filter.

Berkey is also the most adaptable and flexible water filtering system that is available. Berkey water filters are revolutionary, and there are no other filters that can compare to its filtering ability.

Berkey has also designed water filters that could cater to the need of families or groups of different sizes, and also for different reasons and situations.

Most of the Berkey water filters available are actually very versatile that they can be used for home use, but they could also be taken outdoors, for camping or for traveling.

But Berkey knows that the quality of water that you consume at home is also as important when you are outside when you are at work or when you are at school, that is why they designed the Go Berkey Kit.

Go Berkey Kit
The Go Berkey Kit was designed to be the ultimate outdoor water partner, and you can use it for work, school when you travel, go backpacking, hiking or camping.

The Sports Berkey is the one that uses when you are on the go when you are out and about, but the Go Berkey System is ideal as a passive purification system when you are just staying in one place.

The Go Berkey Kit can also be a big help in time of emergency, just like other Berkey water filter, it can purify treated water and water from an untreated and natural source.

The Go Berkey Kit was made with 304 highly polished AISI stainless steel, and it is also complete with one Black Berkey purification element, and it can store .95 liters or one quart of water.

It weighs 2.4 pounds, so it is very easily to bring along with you anywhere you go, and it was built as the perfect partner for people on the go.

Since the Go Berkey Kit has been configured with one Black Berkey purification element, it can actually purify up to one Gallon or 3.8 liters of water per hour, that is equal to 24 gallons of clean and safe water per day if you will refill the system continuously.

Just because it is smaller than most Berkey water filter does not mean that is has a less superior purification system, it can still remove 99.99% of contaminants from your drinking water like pathogenic bacteria, parasites, viruses, cysts, VOCs, heavy metals and other substances that can be harmful when ingested.

Please note that the Go Berkey cannot hold a fluoride filter because it is too small.
The Go Berkey Kit is in a neat size, and so it is very easy to pack along when you are on the go.

What can I say? Can’t go wrong with a Berkey. I own this one and the Big Bertha

I purchased this realizing that this compact size Berkey had a limit of 1 quart. Wanted it for smaller size on my countertop and for travel. However, as it is advertised as filtering one gallon/hour, I thought this would still meet my needs as I don’t mind re-filling it.

Pros–great size, stainless steel is very attractive
Cons–terrible filtering–I pour in the water, come back an hour later, and still not completely filtered. As some have stated, might be issue with the black filters. Also, the plastic travel bottle doesn’t work at all, even with several people attempting to get water out of it.

I am disappointed in this filter and will be returning it. Perhaps the larger Berkey’s have a better system.

Excellent product, but I have one rather serious complaint. When pouring water into the top filter section, invariably some water will spill onto the outside of the container and make it’s way down INTO the lower section where the filtered water collects. Major design flaw! The way the two reservoirs fit together, it seems upside down. If they inverted how the containers fit together, then water couldn’t slide into the bottom container from the outside. Just plain dumb

This kit arrived as promised and we’re happy with it. It’s tiny but does the job.

  5. Elizabeth Robinson

Works great, fresh taste. Used this on my desert hike trip through the Middle East. Be mindful though that once you prime it small amounts of moisture will be hidden inside the filter block. I thought ours was dry enough to travel and left it my suitcase, unfortunately the cold temperatures being 39,000 ft caused the filter to expand and crack; lesson learned. Thank goodness I didn’t prime the other two I purchased. Next time I will just leave it in my carry-on.

I just took a three week trip and took my travel Berkey with me; works like a charm! I hate buying bottled water so I bought this and used on the trip without any issues, and had good safe, clean, great tasting water the whole time. When I am not traveling, it is used in my office at work! Very handy and highly recommended!

Bought this kit to (A) test out the super-hyped Berkey brand, and (B) to filter collected rain water in case of emergency if /when municipal water failed. The priming process was pretty low-end and painful – in my case, impossible. None of the faucets in my house would work with the supplied “priming button” (a gasket washer that costs $2.50 if ordered separately!!) to form a tight seal. An unprimed or partially primed filter will drip at an agonizingly slow rate. I ended up using a transferring hand pump to force water through the filter. After that it filters at a still slow but much more acceptable rate. The stainless steel containers look very well-made and polished. Unfortunately they seem to impart a metallic taste to the water if the filtered water is left in the lower chamber for some time. I am willing to trust the filter’s capability for emergency use thanks to several youtube videos where people put nasty water through their Berkey then drank from it. For now there’s no plan to replace my Breta with a bigger Berkley. I’ll just pack up the Go Berkey then hope it will never be needed.

  8. Cathy Hathaway

I was really impressed with how well this worked for me on a recent trip. Filtered water much faster than I expected…and was easy to prime. This was not my first Berkey, so I have the hang of priming. Still haven’t tried the sport bottle though. Did finally use the sport bottle. It’s good for filtering. A little tricky to use. I do like it though, if I’m going to be around questionable water.

  9. Paul Richter

Purchased this as a trial to see how I liked the Berkey system before buying a larger dual filter model. Worked great at first and ended up using the stainless steel one as my only drinking water filter. Had to frequently empty bottom into a pitcher and refill, but that was not a big deal to me. After about 3 years of use the stainless steel container is leaking from the bottom. I tested this by removing the top portion and carefully filling the bottom with water and setting it on a dry paper towel. Over several hours a significant amount of the water leaked out, soaking the paper towel and leaving a puddle on my countertop. Was not expecting this as the sales pitch said they were such good quality they become family heirlooms. For the price, the warranty for leaks should definitely exceed 12 months. Because the company is making false claims about the longevity of the product, I will refrain from buying any more products from them. It’s a shame, I think the filter is great and makes even the worst water taste good. As for the plastic travel bottle, it is cheap but serviceable for a short time. I have seen other bottle setups like this for under ten dollars elsewhere.

I recently bought a small Berkey purifier, not from Amazon but directly from Burkey, and as a matter of fact, I liked mine so much I bought one for my mom, and she also loves hers! The only complaint we have had is that it is so hard to prime the filters. It was almost comical how we tried different faucets, we tried working together on it, no matter what we did we couldn’t get it primed correctly. Finally, we figured out such a simple solution. I went out and bought a plastic condiment bottle, after measuring the hole the water needs to go into, and I found a bottle with the end of the tip smaller than the hole. I filled the bottle with water, and squirted it into the hole at the top of the filter, and lo and behold, it easily went through the filter and had the filter totally sweating. I refilled the bottle @ 2 more times, and now the filter works so much faster! I just wanted to share our discovery!

I have had my portable “Go” Berkey for several months now and take it with me everywhere I travel. Hotels in the US, friends houses, foreign destinations – everywhere! In fact, I like it so much, that I then purchased the “Big Berkey” that holds 2.25 gallons. I was so impressed with this, that I then purchased the Colossal “Crown” Berkey that holds 6.5 gallons! My 6 member family is happy with all three and they are an indispensable part of our lives. We emphasize copious water consumption and these the most logical, efficient and cost effective means of accomplishing this.

We have missionary friends in primitive areas of India and Africa who have also found the Berkey system to play a critical role in their lives. Everyone is happy with its performance.

Regarding those who say it “leaks”, I can authoritatively say that the spigot only leaks for those who don’t know how to “screw a lid on tight” or don’t know how to properly connect a hose onto a faucet. The only “leak” issue that potential purchasers will need to be prepared for, is that it can be overfilled, causing the water to leak out between the upper and lower chambers.

Bought this for the wife for her birthday (iI know, super romantic) and she absolutely loved it. We have the big berky at home and we have used this twice on the road. Once while camping and once for a week’s vacation. It requires constant attention if you want to have any accumulation of water and I highly recommend another vessel to offload the treated water so you can keep adding. The water bottle was a bit of a pain to get going but is super convenient for quick outings

We purchased this small unit for our RV. It’s perfect. It doesn’t take up a lot of room, filters fast, and gives fresh tasting water where ever we go. It has a padded travel case to protect it. I could have done without the travel bottle and had the price be a few bucks less.

  14. Mary Rieder

I purchased the Crown Berkey last year, and since then 90% of what I have drank has gone through a Berkey filter. I have found Berkey to be an excellent filter, everything I have
put through it has come out tasting excellent. This includes sketchy well water that may or may not have gone through a reverse osmosis filter.
This summer I have done a lot more traveling, and needed a way to get filtered water on the road without carrying around gallons and gallons of pre-filtered water. Enter the Go Berkey. I considered the Travel Berkey, but wanted something a little more compact in case I had to get on an airplane.
The Go Berkey comes with the upper chamber, the filter and everything needed to attach it, and the lower chamber. It also comes with a water bottle with a filter in it, and the Berkey Primer (which Berkey now includes with all Go Berkey kits as of the beginning of 2017 according to their website). Finally, in order to hold it all together it comes with a very nice padded carrying case.
The filter assembly assembles just like any other Berkey filter system (first picture). The filter goes in the top chamber (second picture), and sticks through a hole into the bottom chamber. Water is poured in the top and slowly drains through the filter to the bottom chamber. The capacity is not much, but I think it is an acceptable trade off for the portability.
For travel, you can flip the top chamber over and store it inside the bottom. There is no need to remove the filter (third picture). The cap also fits on the bottom of the bottom chamber, leading to a very nice, compact little package. This all goes inside the bag, which has enough capacity for the filter assembly as well as the water bottle and the primer.
Three bag is quite roomy, there is no need to cram everything in (fourth picture). It also is sturdy enough to stand up on its own (fifth picture). I could have done without a pocket for the water bottle to save a little room overall, but that is just a design choice, off they didn’t include it somebody would complain that there wasn’t a pocket for it. I have confidence that, if packed carefully, it will be protected while traveling.
The priming tool is a very nice inclusion (sixth picture). If you use Berkey filters in any way you should have one. It really works a lot better then the standard way Berkey suggests that you prime your filters. It is a two way primer, so you can both prime and purge filters (you probably want to purge them before traveling or long term storage to avoid mold buildup, although I have no idea if this nasty reduce filter lifespan). I found the easiest way to prime the filters was to install it in the top chamber like you are going to use it, but to prime it from below to start the water flow.
The included water bottle is not really that great, I have seen countless ones just like it in outdoor stores. It is not my preferred type of filter, it requires you to suck water through the filter, which is a lot more work then you might think. Ultimately it is a wash for me, I don’t really care that they included it, I ultimately bought the kit for the Berkey. Maybe I will eventually find a use for it, probably just as a backup backup filter in my truck for emergencies.
I am quite pleased with the Go Berkey, I feel like I got my money worth (sort of, Berkeys are quite spendy, they all seem about 1/3 more expensive then they should be). If you are looking to get into Berkey, this would be a great way to try them out, and could serve as a main drinking water filter if you are patient (at least until you break down and but a bigger one).

  15. Misty Gibson

I love this filter. It is a perfect personal water filter whether I’m at home or camping. I’m not interested in the plastic bottle, but I took out the filter, and packed it in my B.O.B. for an emergency filter.

Once the bottle is removed, and the black filter unit is installed, the bag is too big for effectively packing, but it works perfect for my growler & Co2 tap kit. I used my Condor H2O Pouch I got on Amazon, and the filter with the Berkey Black Filter Primer fit perfectly with room to spare in the side pocket.

I also love how it is made out of stainless steel making it super-durable. Plus I can use the bottom part as an emergency cooking pot for boiling water or whatever.

  16. Phyllis Wakeland

There are two of us plus an adult child that frequents the house, this is adequate for us. I keep emptying it into a pitcher in the frig to keep enough water on hand. Filling the top chamber will give you about a quart of filtered water. If there is some kind of tainted water crisis in the area, I’m good to go! It’s small – a little over a foot tall and 3 1/2 inches in diameter. It sits unobtrusively on the kitchen counter right next to the sink. I’m so happy with my purchase!
